V838 Monocerotis

This 2004 Hubble Space Telescope image shows an expanding halo of light around a distant star, named V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon). Interstellar dust is illuminated by the red supergiant star at the middle of the image.

V838 Mon is located at edge of our Milky Way galaxy, about 20,000 light-years from Earth (in the direction of the constellation Monoceros).
